FOLLOW-ON TESOL UNCONFERENCEVN: Exploring the Future of English Language Teaching

HCMC, Vietnam – The recently concluded “FOLLOW-ON TESOL UNCONFERENCEVN” brought together educators, linguists, and industry professionals to discuss the future of English language teaching (ELT) under the theme “The Future of English Language Teaching: Opportunities and Challenges.”  The event, held on July 12, 2024, at Nguyen Tat Thanh University, HCMC, highlighted the evolving landscape of ELT and the myriad of opportunities and challenges it presents.

Keynote Speakers and PanelsThe unconference featured a diverse lineup of keynote speakers who shared their insights on various aspects of ELT. The conference was very honored with the presence of the Project Team Lead, including Dr. Dang Thanh Nhon, Dean of School of Languages, Tan Tao University, Project Team Lead, Dr. Do Huu Nguyen Loc, Vice-rector of University of Economics and Finance, Chairman of HCMC TESOL Association, Project Team member, Dr. John Baker, Senior Lecturer, Ton Đuc Thang University, Project Team Member, Dr. Ho Van Han, Dean of Faculty of Foreign Languages, NTTU, Project Team Member.

On behalf of the Project Team Lead – Dr. Ho Van Han, Dean of Faculty of Foreign Languages, NTTU, kicked off the event with a thought-provoking address on the impact of technology on language learning. He emphasized the growing role of artificial intelligence in personalized learning and the importance of adapting teaching methods to meet the needs of digital-native students.

The discussion on four aspects “Technology Integration, Classroom Motivation and Management, Testing and Assessment, Teaching ESP followed, featuring experts from different universities. The panelists explored four main aspects, especially how digital tools and resources can enhance language acquisition and discussed the challenges teachers face in integrating these technologies into their classrooms.

Workshops and Interactive Sessions

Participants engaged in a series of interactive workshops designed to provide practical solutions to common teaching challenges. Topics ranged from maintaining motivation in learners to developing culturally responsive teaching strategies. One of the most popular sessions, “Testing and Assessment,” offered hands-on experience with tools and techniques for facilitating effective evaluating process.

The unconference provided ample opportunities for networking and collaboration.
