HUNG VUONG DEATH ANNIVERSARY – THINGS YOU DON’T KNOW

As a Vietnamese citizen, I doubt that all of you have already known Hung Vuong anniversary which is held on March,10th right? However, let’s find out the origin and meaning of this festival.

It is legendary that Lac Long Quan and Au Co were considered two great ancestors of Vietnamese people, parents of all Hung Kings. Hung Vuong anniversary, or also called Hung Vuong Temple Festival, is being held on March, 10st lunar each year at Hung temple. During this event, we will have various local folklore activities like procession and thurification at Hung temple.

Leading the procession team are Lion dance team and National flag Processors. Girls with graceful Long Dress will have offering of joss sticks, fruits, Chung cake, round sticky rice cake, and a variety of local produce while elders will also join the procession with traditional long dress and turbans.

Festivals cannot be held without entertaining and amusing performances by the team with comical masks, showcasing the joyful and simple life of farmers. The procession marches along the central courtyard of the festival towards the main gate of the Hung Temple, and stops in front of the temple gate, facing the peak of Nghia Linh Mountain – where the Hung kings are worshipped.

The Hung Kings’ Temple Festival holds a special significance, embodying the high tradition of “remembering one’s roots” of our nation and reminding us to follow the teaching of President Ho Chi Minh, “The Hung Kings have built our country, and it is our duty to protect it together.” Remarkably, on December 6, 2012, the Hung Kings’ Temple Festival was recognized by UNESCO as the Intangible Cultural Heritage.

It can be said that the Hung Kings’ Temple Festival is one of the grandest celebrations, representing the cultural beauty of our nation and the pride of each of us. Wish you a happy holiday with your loved ones and friends!
